Young Men’s Health Day

June 6th, 2007 by Eric

teen-health.jpgAs part of Men’s Health Week (8th – 15th June), local agencies will be holding a Young Men’s Health Day in Priory Meadow Shopping Centre on Monday 11th June from 9am – 5pm.

The event in Priory Meadow will see a range of tests available for anyone who attends, including blood sugar levels, blood pressure and body fat. For the more competitive, there will be a 500m rowing challenge and a 30 second step-test challenge, with gym passes at Falaise Gym on offer for the winners.

Advice will be available on a whole range of topics including sexual health, alcohol, substance misuse and stopping smoking. A local GP will also be available for part of the day for anyone who would like general advice on any particular medical condition and there will also be demonstrations including boxing, skipping and how to make a healthy lunch.

Among the organisations involved in this year’s
event are Hastings and Rother PCT, Pulse, Active Hastings, Action for Change, Youth Development Service, CRI, Xtrax Young People’s Centre, Respond, DAB Arts, Hastings College, Falaise Gym and Spin City Cycles.

Dave Whatley, Community Development Worker for Pulse, said: “Although the event in Priory Meadow is specifically aimed at young men, any man is welcome to come along on the day, no matter what their age.

“Men are often reluctant to seek medical advice and are more inclined to tough it out or not bother at all, so we hope the day will encourage them to come along and get advice and information, or maybe just some ideas on how they could lead a healthier life, in a friendly and informal setting.”

Men’s Health Week is a national campaign run by the Men’s Health Forum, a charity which aims to help raise awareness of health issues that men may be too embarrassed to seek help for.
